MCG Offers Cancer Screenings During Prostate Awareness Month

The Urology Clinic at MCG Hospitals and Clinics (Augusta, GA) will offer prostate cancer screenings during September in recognition of Prostate Awareness Month. Rectal exams are free and the PSA blood test will cost $10.00.

The prostate is the most common site of cancer in men, and prostate tumors are found in 38 percent of all over age 50 and in 89 percent of all men over age 85. Most prostate cancers are slow-growing tumors and are most often found during a rectal examination by the patient's health care provider. The individual usually does not have any symptoms. However, some men complain of pain or discomfort in the lower back, pelvis and upper legs. There are no prevention guides, making it important for all men over 50 to have a yearly rectal and prostate examination. African American males and men with a family history of prostate cancer should begin this testing at age 40.
