MCG Health Bloodless Medicine Seminar Scheduled

January 22, 2008

Augusta, GA--

Is using donated blood not a part of your health care wishes? Then make plans to attend the MCG Health Bloodless Medicine Seminar on February 16 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the MCG Alumni Center, 919 15th St.

At this free seminar, Dr. Jorge Cue, Medical Director of the MCG Health Bloodless Medicine and Surgery Program, will explain how incorporating bloodless medicine into your plan of care helps health care professionals respect your wishes.

The MCG Health Bloodless Medicine and Surgery Program is a specialized service for patients who wish to avoid the use of donor blood during medical and surgical procedures. For patients motivated by religious convictions and others who are concerned about blood-borne illnesses, this program offers viable treatment alternatives. MCG Health is one of only about 120 medical centers across the country and the only one in the CSRA to offer this comprehensive program led by a dedicated medical director and a physicians advisory panel.

Bloodless medicine can be applied in cancer treatment; colorectal surgery; gastroenterology; general surgery; gynecology; hematology; neurosurgery; neurology; oncology; oral and maxillofacial surgery; plastic and reconstructive surgery; thoracic and cardiac surgery; vascular surgery; and GI bleeds and stem cell procedures.

Patients may choose from a number of medical and surgical tools to help reduce or eliminate the need for blood transfusions. These tools include medications that aid in stimulating red blood cell production and clotting ability, as well as specialized surgical instruments that cut and coagulate simultaneously.

An added benefit of the program is that it is a less invasive medical approach, which usually results in more rapid healing and a quicker recovery.

Refreshments will be provided at the seminar. For more information, call 706-721-2677.
