Did you know that your pediatrician can be essential in detecting eye problems in your child? Most parents don’t. But asking your pediatrician to check your child’s eyes at each well-child visit is a great way to make sure your child’s vision remains healthy and problem-free.

If your pediatrician spots a problem, he or she may refer you to an ophthalmologist for a more comprehensive exam to see if your child might need glasses or other corrective therapy. Warning signs that parents should discuss with their pediatrician or eye care professional include:
• Holding books or other items very close when reading or playing
• Frequent squinting, tilting of the head or closing one eye when looking at something
• Frequent eye-rubbing
• Excessive tearing or other discharge
• Avoidance of near-vision or distance-vision activities
• Light sensitivity
• Eye movement that appears cross-eyed or not coordinated
• Eye redness that doesn’t go away in a few days, along with pain or light sensitivity

Some common problems that an ophthalmologist can help with include:
• Lazy eye
• Eye misalignment
• Blurry vision, caused by nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism

Along with a healthy body, your pediatrician can also ensure your child has healthy eyes. Don’t forget to ask about this important part of your child’s doctor’s appointment.
