The Board of Directors of the United Network for Organ Sharing recently granted full approval for MCG Health System to start a heart transplantation program. “This is the first step in a process that will allow us to become the only heart transplant program in the CSRA,” said Dr. Kevin Landolfo, the health system’s Clinical Service Chief and Director of the Heart Transplant Program. “After November, we expect that area heart failure patients will no longer have to leave the area to get a heart transplant. They’ll be able to stay in the area and come to MCG.” Since 1968, MCG Health System has performed more than 1,700 kidney transplants. Simultaneous kidney/pancreas transplantation began in 1994. Today, the health system is the only medical facility in the state outside of Atlanta to perform kidney and pancreas transplants. MCG Health System is composed of three organizations - MCG Health Inc. and the clinical services offered by the faculty of the Medical College of Georgia and the members of the MCG Physicians Practice Group. MCG Health, Inc. is a not-for-profit corporation operating the MCG Medical Center, MCG Children’s Medical Center, the MCG Sports Medicine Center, MCG Ambulatory Care Center, the Georgia Radiation Therapy Center and related clinical facilities and services. MCG Health, Inc. was formed to support the research and education mission of the Medical College of Georgia, and to build the economic growth of the CSRA, the state of Georgia and the Southeast by providing an environment for delivering the highest level of primary and specialty health care.
