Cystic Fibrosis Center
The MCG Cystic Fibrosis Center is certified by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation as a patient care, teaching and research facility. Services are offered to cystic fibrosis patients of all ages for either consultation or primary care. A team approach incorporates pulmonologists, gastroenterologists, surgeons, nutritionists, psychiatrists, radiologists, social workers, nurses and others needed in the comprehensive evaluation of new patients or management of complications as they arise. Services are provided to infants, children and adolescents through the pediatric clinics and to adults through the internal medicine and pulmonology subspecialty clinics.
Inpatient management is available in the pediatric and internal medicine services of the Medical College of Georgia Hospitals and Clinics.
The standard of diagnosis continues to be analysis of the chloride content of sweat collected by the Gibson-Cooke pilocarpine iontophoresis method.
Besides the outpatient clinics and inpatient management services for cystic fibrosis patients, other available services include the pediatric and internal medicine pulmonary function laboratories, nutritional assessment and guidance and assessment or education provided by respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other medical subspecialists through consultation.
