Children's Champions

JamieBecause there are children like Jamie
Judging from the amount of energy Jamie displays, it is hard to imagine this blond hair bombshell ever had trouble sleeping. But when he was just 3 1/2 years old, Jamie was constantly fighting upper respiratory infections and breathing problems, which were especially noticeable when he slept. Jamie’s doctor referred him to the MCG Georgia Sleep Center where he underwent an overnight sleep study. The MCG sleep specialists found Jamie was breathing only four to six breaths per minute, resulting in low oxygen levels. After further tests, Jamie was diagnosed as having Type 1 Arnold Chiari Malformation, a congenital defect in the back of the head where the brain and spinal cord connect. Jamie’s brain was pressing against the base of his skull causing his breathing problems. But thanks to the region’s only pediatric neurosurgery team, Jamie successfully underwent brain surgery to relieve the pressure. The result is the active, healthy boy you see today.

Because of Jamie, and the many other children with breathing problems, MCG Children’s Medical Center provides the area’s only pediatric sleep center and pediatric neurosurgery services. We are here to help children of all ages get a healthy start on life.
