Pediatric Transplant Services

The goal of Transplant Services is to help children with end stage renal disease return to as normal a lifestyle as possible, restoring health and wellness, by receiving a successful kidney transplant. The MCG transplant team consists of surgeons, pediatric nephrologists, physician assistants, social workers, nurse coordinators, and laboratory and administrative professionals dedicated to accomplishing this goal. MCG performed its first pediatric kidney transplant in 1969, and now completes 4-8 per year.

We have a laparoscopically trained urologist who can remove a kidney from a living donor with a laparoscope, which is less invasive with quicker healing than the traditional open nephrectomy. We also have dedicated pediatric psychologists who conduct thorough pre-op evaluations of transplant candidates and their family support network. Additionally, we have access to interpreter services for those patients and families who require it; one of our pediatric nephrologists speaks fluent Spanish.

We offer the Children’s Medical Center model of patient- and family-centered care, to include a nurse clinician who maintains frequent contact with families and their pediatric patients, functioning as a case manager for these unique cases. We offer individualized attention for all of our pediatric patients. We also have a strong outreach program throughout Georgia, with satellite clinics operating in Athens, Albany, Savannah and Dublin.

Transplant Services is very accessible and offers personalized, attentive care for your child in a pediatric outpatient and inpatient setting. Our pediatric transplant physicians specialize in treating children with kidney disease, guiding them through transplantation evaluation and closely monitoring them after the transplant for signs of organ rejection. The MCG Children’s Medical Center pediatric transplant program has a 100% success rate (defined as transplanted kidney survival and function) for children at both the 1-year and 3-year mark over the last six years, as reported by the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR). The most current SRTR report covers graft survival stats at one year (Transplant done 1/1/03 - 6/30/05) and three year (Transplant done 7/1/00 - 12/31/02).
