Pediatric Echocardiography
An echocardiogram (often called an echo) is a test that uses ultrasound images to look at the structures and function of the heart. Cardiac imaging and echo are essential tools for doctors to diagnose and treat heart disease. It is a safe and painless test. An echo is often a less invasive alternative to a cardiac catheterization.
MCG Children’s Medical Center has the region’s only echocardiography lab dedicated to caring for children with congenital and acquired heart defects. And, we have the unique distinction of being one of only 13 pediatric labs in the United States certified and accredited for children by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories.
We bring a wealth of experience and expertise in non-invasive cardiology. This means our staff and physicians are specially trained to diagnose and treat even the most complex heart problems in children.
As part of our patient- and family-centered care, parents are encouraged to tour the lab and accompany their child to the procedure. Every step is explained in detail to allow time for questions and concerns.
